Wightlink ‘goes orange’ to support Ryde Inshore Rescue (RIR)

Wightlink is backing a major drive to raise funds for independent lifeboats.

The #GoOrange weekend is held annually to raise money for independent lifeboats nationally including the three organisations on the Island.

Wightlink hosted Ryde Inshore Rescue crew member John McBride and Volunteer Tony Overbury, both in full kit, to collect from cross-Solent travellers at the Fast Cat terminal on Ryde Pier Head on Friday morning.

John, who works for Wightlink as a Journey Co-ordinator, and Tony, who is a sustainability consultant, raised more than £70 from their stint at the pier – they were joined by fellow crew members who brought along a rescue vessel.

Ady Farrell from RIR says: “As Ryde Pier and Fishbourne port are both in our area, we have worked closely with Wightlink over the years and we are really grateful for their support.

“Not only does Wightlink allow us to collect on their property and ships but they provide us with travel when we have needed to get our boats to the mainland for essential maintenance.

Wightlink Chief Executive Keith Greenfield adds: “As a maritime organisation we are very well aware of the important role played by seafaring rescue organisations so we are delighted to do our bit to support Ryde Inshore Rescue.”
